Acceptable Use
nohistory.chat is a service for temporary, ephemeral conversations. You may use it for legitimate purposes including projects, coordination, venting, and casual discussion.
Prohibited Activities
You may not use this service to:
- Share or request illegal content
- Share sexual or violent content involving minors (CSAM) in any form
- Harass, threaten, or stalk other people
- Coordinate or promote criminal activity
- Spam or attempt to overload the service
- Bypass rate limits or abuse access controls
โ ๏ธ Rooms reported for abuse may be expired or deleted. In clear cases of illegal content, IP addresses may be permanently blocked or throttled.
โฐ Ephemeral by Design
nohistory.chat is specifically designed not to be a backup or archive:
- Each room has a fixed lifetime (1 hour to 7 days)
- After expiry, the room is closed and cleaned up
- Expired rooms are not meant to be re-opened or archived
- Deleted messages cannot be recovered
๐ก If you need long-term storage, use a proper archival service instead. This is for temporary conversations only.
๐ What We Store
Room Metadata
- Title and description
- Room code and creation/expiration timestamps
- Owner name
- Room status (active/expired)
Messages
Plain-text messages are stored temporarily until the room expires or is deleted. Once expired, messages are removed from the system.
Abuse Reports
When a room is reported:
- Report reason and timestamp are stored
- Reporter's IP address is recorded for abuse handling
- Reports are used to identify patterns of abuse
Rate Limits
Simple counters per IP address to prevent spam and flooding. These are not permanent records.
โน๏ธ We do not require usernames, emails, or accounts for normal use. However, IP addresses may be logged for security purposes.
๐ IP Addresses & Logs
Standard server logs may contain:
- Your IP address
- Request details (timestamp, endpoint, user agent)
- Response status codes
Additionally, message, report, and rate-limit entries may store IP addresses for abuse handling and security. These are subject to routine cleanup and are not kept indefinitely.
โ ๏ธ If you're reporting abuse, your IP will be recorded. If you're harassing others, your IP may be blocked.
๐ Encryption
In Transit
All connections should be protected with HTTPS, which encrypts traffic between your browser and server. This prevents ISPs and network administrators from reading your messages.
On Server
Messages are stored on the server in plain text. They are not end-to-end encrypted. While we use secure practices:
- Messages are not encrypted at rest
- Server administrators could theoretically access them
- For highly sensitive conversations, consider additional encryption layers
๐ก For extremely sensitive information, encrypt it yourself before sending, or use a dedicated end-to-end encrypted service.
๐ก๏ธ Abuse & Moderation
If a Room is Reported
When abuse is reported, an admin may:
- Review the room and reported content
- Expire the room immediately (prevent new messages)
- Delete the room, messages, and reports
- Block or throttle traffic from responsible IPs
- Report to law enforcement if illegal content is found
Appeal or Questions
If your IP is blocked or you believe moderation was unjust:
- Open a temporary room and mention the issue
- Contact the deployer of this instance directly
- Provide context and your IP address
